چکیده

Terminology structuring aims to elicit semantic relations between the terms of a domain. We propose here to exploit definitions found in corpora to obtain such semantic relations. Definition typologies show that definitions can be introduced by different semantic relations, some of these relations being likely to structure terminologies. Our aim is therefore to mine “defining expressions” in domainspecific corpora, and to detect the semantic relations they involve between their main terms. We use lexico-syntactic markers and patterns to detect at the same time both a definition and its main semantic relation. 46 markers and 74 patterns have been designed and tuned on a first corpus in the field of anthropology. We report on their evaluation on a second corpus in the field of dietetics, where they obtained 4% to 36% recall and from 61 to 66% precision, and discuss the relative accuracy of different subclasses of markers for this task.

Clustering Related Terms with Definitions

It is a challenging task to match similar or related terms/expressions in NLP and Text Mining applications. Two typical areas in need for such work are terminology and ontology constructions, where terms and concepts are extracted and organized into certain structures with various semantic relations. In the EU BOOTSTrep Project we test various techniques for matching terms that can assist human...

A suggested Motivational Method for Teaching Scientific Terminology, With a Practical Example

Using a reductionist approach, the motivational method for teaching scientific terminology aims at breaking down terms and their definitions into separate components, i.e. morphemes and their semantic features, rather than establishing a connection between terms and their definitions as holistic units. In other words, the ultimate goal of this method is achieving “semantic motivation,” (as oppo...

The Generation Of Term Definitions From An On-Line Terminological Thesaurus

A new type of machine dictionary is described, which uses terminological relations to build up a semantic network representing the terms of a particular subject field, through interaction with the user. These relations are then used to dynamically generate outline definitions of terms in on-line query mode. The definitions produced are precise, consistent and informative, and allow the user to ...

A Vague Sense Classifier for Detecting Vague Definitions in Ontologies

Vagueness is a common human knowledge and linguistic phenomenon, typically manifested by predicates that lack clear applicability conditions and boundaries such as High, Expert or Bad. In the context of ontologies and semantic data, the usage of such predicates within ontology element definitions (classes, relations etc.) can hamper the latter’s quality, primarily in terms of shareability and m...

Qualitative Linguistic Terms and Geographic Concepts: Quantifiers in Definitions

Definitions of categories in existent geospatial ontologies are an invaluable source of information because they provide us with essential knowledge about concepts and their properties. A closer examination reveals that definitions also contain supplementary linguistic items, which are mainly qualitative expressions, such as quantifiers. This inclusion of modifiers in definitions affects the wa...
